From Classroom to Cuisine

100+ Years of History

At Old School Eatery, we wanted to create a restaurant with old-school food and a new-school feel. We figured there’s no better place to do it than in a classroom at Revelstoke’s former and historic Mountain View School.

A Short History Lesson

Mountain View School

Mountain View School opened its doors on February 6, 1914, and was deemed “the finest high school in B.C.” in Revelstoke’s the Mail-Herald issued that same year. However, it wasn’t the first school on Third Street on the bank of the Columbia River. It joined Central School that stood since 1903 at the opposite end of the field farthest from the river.

Unfortunately, Central School burned down in 1959, leaving Mountain View on its own. Rumor has it that if you look hard enough, you might be able to find a brick or two in the field as evidence of where the school once was.

Old School Eatery

Mountain View School operated until 2012, after which the historic building sat quiet for several years before beginning a new chapter as a home for local businesses. Jones Distilling was the first to move in, and Old School Eatery followed soon after, transforming a former classroom into the warm, inviting space you see today.

Founded by Chris van der Linden, Old School Eatery opened in December 2018 with a menu inspired by Asian and Mediterranean flavours. His thoughtfully crafted dishes balanced creativity, comfort, and quality ingredients, a spirit that continues today with a menu that evolves seasonally and embraces fresh ideas and local availability.

Old School Eatery remains committed to its roots while always offering guests something new. Our dining room showcases sweeping views of four surrounding mountains, while the summer patio highlights the heritage schoolhouse brickwork alongside stunning vistas of Mount Begbie and the Columbia River.

Come take a seat with us and enjoy a piece of Revelstoke’s history paired with ever-evolving, flavour-driven cuisine.
